Thank You, Bill O’Reilly, for Making Sexual Harassment a Women’s Health Issue

New Rochelle, NY, April 28, 2017—“Sexual harassment is a women’s health issue,” says
Mary Ann Liebert, publisher of Journal of Women’s Health and founder and CEO of the company that bears her name. “Physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals need to be aware of the negative effects on their patients’ well-being, and fully understand and support their patients’ prerogatives in dealing with it. This is a major imperative.”
“Allegations against Bill O’Reilly, the latest in a string of major sexual harassment accusations which include those against Roger Ailes and President Donald Trump, are now covered extensively in the media because of their prominence,” Liebert continues. “However, many cases of sexual harassment are ignored or unreported, although the effects—personal and professional—may be profound.”
Much harassment is verbal, such as off-color jokes, lewd and inappropriate remarks on a woman’s appearance, and suggestive or sexual proposals. Women may be afraid to report such treatment for fear of repercussion in academic or professional settings. “It occurs on many levels, from the classroom to the board room,” says Liebert.
Journal of Women’s Health is the authoritative peer-reviewed journal published monthly online and in print. The Journal publishes papers on therapeutic considerations for physicians, nurses, and healthcare professionals that will enable effective action and treatment for women patients.
“There is an urgent imperative to provide education to medical and nursing professionals who may have women patients whose health, emotional, or physical security is affected by sexual harassment,” says Gloria Allred, renowned women’s rights lawyer who has represented hundreds of women in sexual harassment suits. “I am committed to making sure this is addressed and that women receive the support and representation they so desperately need. I commend Mary Ann Liebert, Inc. for bringing attention to this critical issue.”
